Postcards from China
Thanks to the benevolence of our close family friend Mary Wang, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime: to report for the BBC World Service.  After I finished in Hong Kong with Metro, I returned to the USA where Mary took me on as a freelance stringer in California and later in China where I created a 10 part radio series for the Chinese World Service on the societal impact of the tremendous changes just getting underway in China at the time.

And now the news...

Beijing 2000 Olympics

Hong Kong's "immigrants"

The new urban poor

Chinese tourists

Smoking

Taiwan's "new media"

The two Shenzhens

China by train

Peasant migration

""Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

"I want to thank the astronauts who are with us, the courageous spacial entrepreneurs who set such a wonderful example for the young of our country."

"Had we to do it over again, we would look at the consequences of catastrophic success, being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day."
