The Last Hu Tongs
While we in the West mourn the passing of the hutongs,
most Beijingers are thrilled with the prospect of
cleaner, more modern apartments that have heating, air
conditioning and, alas, indoor toilets. So,
although it's bland and unsightly, this new housing
revolution marks an incredible opportunity for thousands
of people to improve their living comfort.
